What is the difference between Old School Runescape and new Runescape?

Table of Contents

After Runescape upgraded to its third version, players began to call for the return of the "old school version," and eventually, Jagex brought it back. Old School Runescape and New School Runescape are two very different versions of the same game.

The most important thing to remember is that Old School Runescape is Runescape 2, just as it was a decade ago. The new version is Runescape 3, which has these upgrades:

  • The map's features have changed
  • There are lots of microtransactions
    • You can do very well in this game if you pay real-world money
  • Leveling up is much faster
    • XP rewarded per completed task is much higher
    • You can set a lot of the skills to repeat over and over, which means you can play the game even when you're not present
  • There are better Graphics
  • The newer version has new and clearer sounds
  • There is an improved combat system with real actions instead of only turn-based combat
  • A much bigger community

Runescape 3 gets new content regularly, whereas Old School Runescape changes based on community polls. There have not been any big, fantastic updates to Old School Runescape, which keeps it as close to the original as possible.

Runescape Classic is not Old School Runescape. RuneScape Classic is the original game, which was upgraded to RuneScape 2.
